6 Potential Brain Benefits of Bilingual Education

I just came across this NPR piece on the “bilingual advantage”. I am happy to see more mainstream media attention to the topic of bilingual education. There have been a number of interesting developments in recent months, most notably California’s passage of Proposition 58 which rejects the English-first approach that has been advocated since the late 90’s.

“Traditional programs for English-language learners, or ELLs, focus on assimilating students into English as quickly as possible. Dual-language classrooms, by contrast, provide instruction across subjects to both English natives and English learners, in both English and in a target language.

The goal is functional bilingualism and biliteracy for all students by middle school.”
